eye optometry - blepharitis management
WHAT IT IS

Reclaiming eyelid comfort and health

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids. It is usually caused by bacteria on the eyelid margin and lashes, but it can also occur due to by allergies and other conditions, such as demodex mites infestation in the eyelids.

Blepharitis can cause red, watery eyes, a gritty burning sensation in the eye, swollen or itchy eyelids, and crusty eyelashes. It is very important to treat this prior to eye procedures such as cataract or laser surgery, to prevent serious infection.

At eye. Optometry, we educate our patients on how to keep good care of their eyes and eyelids, and we offer ZEST treatment for immediate improvement in symptoms.

MANAGEMENT

Practical strategies for eyelid well-being

HYGIENE ROUTINE
Keep your hands, face and scalp clean; always remove your make-up before bed; wash your towels and sheets with hot water and dry them on high heat; maintain an eye cleaning routine, and have routine eye exams.
EYE CLEANSERS
Keep your eyelids clean and free of crusts. Cleansing products such as Blephaclean and I-LID ’N LASH Plus are designed specially to clean, hydrate and kill off eyelash mites using special ingredients including tea tree oil.
ANTIMICROBIAL SPRAYS
Cleansing sprays such as BIHOCL O.D. are effective antimicrobial solutions that remove bacteria from eyelids and lashes, reduce eye inflammation, and help to restore overall comfort.
WARM COMPRESS
Apply a warm compress over your closed eye for a few minutes to unblock glands and loosen the crusts on the eyelid, reducing redness and swelling. Follow that with a gentle cleaning and rinsing of the eyelids and lashes.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT
Sometimes, dietary supplementation with an essential fatty acid such as omega-3 is recommended, due to its anti-inflammatory potential. Always consult with your primary care physician before starting any supplement.
MEDICATIONS
If self-care measures aren't enough, your doctor might suggest prescription treatments, such as topical or oral antibiotics, and steroid eyedrops or ointments. Always follow dosing instructions and orders by your doctor.
TREATMENT

Advanced technology for eyelid hygiene

eye optometry - zest treatment

ZEST Treatment

ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment) is developed to treat blepharitis, demodex and dry eyes, which are conditions often associated with poor hygiene of the eye area. It is an eyelid cleaning and debridement system that uses a natural okra-based gel, which causes no stinging, burning or discomfort.

The procedure is quick and painless, bringing immediate relief to symptoms of irritation and dry eye. ZEST fully cleans and gently exfoliates the eyelids and eye area, removing debris and helping to promote healthy, functioning meibomian glands. It may just be the answer to help your eyes feel and look better.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The procedure involves applying a gel to the eyelid margin and lashes with a cotton swab and cleaning in a circular motion, working the gel into a lather. Following the deep cleansing procedure, the gel is rinsed off with saline solution.

The ZEST gel is formulated with a refined extract of okra to lift and clear oil, debris and residue along the eyelid margin. Okra is a powerful cleansing ingredient that is also gentle to use around the eye, helping to calm and soothe inflammation.

After only one treatment, patients will notice an improvement in their blepharitis, demodex, and dry eye symptoms. The treatment takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and you can go back to your usual activities following the treatment.
